I never understood it, neither; but for different reasons than you give. Sure, wrestling is scripted. But in many cases it really does take an athlete to do what they do. People really do perform at amazing levels of endurance and agility, people really do need to be at a certain level of conditioning, people really do acrobatic moves off the top rope or bouncing off of ropes, it really does take a certain amount of strength and power to lift certain people, it really does take speed, wrestlers still have to mentally prepare themselves and get in the zone the same as if they were in any other sport, the body really does take a beating, people really do get hurt, people really do get injured. Professional wrestling has everything any "real" sport has except that fact that it follows a pre laid out plan (when things go right :P ).

Along with all the talking, costumes, and everything else that goes with superstars' characters.

ROTF well that's what WWE has called them since 1986. :P

It's not too bad of a word I think.

The sooner the 'fake' stigma is lost the better. Of course wrestling is fake, it's on TV! The vast majority of TV is fake, the only exception being game shows and sport. Some would argue even the news has been kayfabed by certain networks. Reality TV is semi-scripted, even if the contestants don't know what's coming the producers definitely do. My point is, as long as Lost, 24, House, Heroes and whatever other shows are popular, there's no reason for people to say "Wrestling? But that's all fake!"

When we can all accept the fake side of it, we can all start to appreciate what isn't fake. Soaps are popular because of interesting storylines, interesting characters and maybe good acting if we're lucky...although we're usually not. Wrestling is like that.

I never really understood people dismissing it as fake. Comparing wrestling to sport is like comparing a soap to real life. One is mirroring the other, but with the advantage of being scripted to keep it interesting.

I don't either, but the reality of it is that they do... the reason Brock Lesnar had such a bitch of a time getting accepted in MMA is because all of their fans viewed him as being just another big lunkhead fake pro wrestler. And any mainstream coverage that wrestling does get, it's always with a snicker from the reporter; they may as well be reporting a story about aliens or the Lock Ness Monster for all the seriousness that they give it. Every time wrestling is on a TV in whatever establishment I happen to be at (bar, Boston Pizza...whatever) all I hear is snickering and insults from people...I guess if I wasn't a fan I'd find the whole circus quite amusing myself.

THEN you get the hardcore MMA fans who run around like they're the elitist of the elite, you know, they "eat, shit, breathe and consume MMA dammit," and don't you DARE mention wrestling in the same breath as their sacred past time, or god dammit, they're gonna put you in a leg lock, just like they learned on that Chuck Liddell instructional video they bought last week! THOSE guys are funny as shit...biggest bunch of douche bags I've ever come across, and unfortunately, they have quite a large and passionate clique, and it appears to be growing all the time. No, I really don't see MMA's popularity declining to a great degree....

I just went way off track and lost my train of thought...but you get the gist...

I bet you most of those guys used to watch wrestling too.

Here is the thing that we have yet to consider....The Internet. On one hand, the internet SAVED mixed martial arts. It got to the point where MMA was outlawed until Zuffa bought the UFC and attempted to make it mainstream. But in those dark ages, MMA fights were passed along around the internet and whatnot.

On the other hand I think the internet has really hurt wrestling. Not only are fans in the know, you can't surprise them.

As for wrestling getting another boom, it's quite possible, but the longer it takes, the likelyhood of it actually happening is decreasing. Who are going to train and work with the youngsters? Can you imagine Edge as a grizzled veteran? "And this is how you do the running man hug, got it?"

There are tons of wrestling schools all over the place. Afa and The Samoan have one, Harley Race has one, Shawn Michaels has one down in Texas, Johnny Rodz has one in New York City, Killer Kowalski's old place is still being run by somebody else over in Boston. Any other wrestler may be willing to train somebody; and there are tons of other wrestling training schools run by lesser known people. I know you claim to hate wrestling these days, but worrying about who will train and work with youngsters has got to be the most illogical thing you've said in your six years here.

I have no doubt that wrestling will have another boom sooner or later. Even if it's not spearheaded by WWE. All it will take is an innovative company and a breakthrough star.

Couldn't agree more. In fact wrestlers generally have a worse schedule than pretty much all other athletes. They work a harder sport than pretty much any other, train as much as anyone in the world, and never get time off. Even MMA fighters and boxers, they get like six months off at a time between fights. Sure they work together and try to make sure they come out without taking anything too bad, but even standard bumps add up.

Ok, find where it says I actually give a shit? And even if I did (which I don't) I have vested time so who the fuck are you to say?

Yeah, I know there are schools, but you get most experience through actual WORK. And lets not even bother getting into how many shitty wrestling schools are out there run by guys who were never really that good. Team 3D anyone? Just look at the talent coming outta there. :P

Damn Strung. I'm just debating the point. It wasn't a personal attack.

And who "the fuck am I to say" is someone with an opinion on the matter the same as you.

I was just saying. Does it really sound illogical? No, I don't think so. :P

And since I stuck around the site despite my new found hatred of wrestling, I'm gonna bitch. I'm bitter. :)

I would have to agree with your previous point that actual work is the best way for a young wrestler to learn how to excel and maybe one day be the next megastar. But I don't think at all it's out of the realm of possibilities for it to actually happen. I guess we'll just agree to disagree and wait and see.

Is it true WWE put last years WrestleMania free on air at the same time UFC 117 is on?

Well played, Strung...well-played!

I'm still waiting for the first Triple Threat MMA fight:

Anderson Silva vs. Royce Gracie vs. STRUNG :yahoo:

I'd buy it.
