 Dragon Age: Origins
Picked this up at the recommendation of the new dude at work. I didn't like the sound of it at first, being able to choose race and class and all that, reminds me of all I hated about Oblivion, but actually it's turned out pretty good.
From what I can work out, the choices you make only affect the start of the game, and they all merge together at a certain point not too far in. I chose the City Elf version and it was awesome. Without ruining anything, the female version of City Elf is pretty nuts. There's some hardcore stuff in there that comes out of nowhere.
The gameplay is simple, battles are all on the overworld map so load times are minimal. Fighting is super easy too, melee style, and most monsters go down quickly. I'm sick of RPGs that let you go about ten minutes into a dungeon before having to turn back to heal, or otherwise use up all your MP/mana/items to stay alive. Saving anywhere is nice too.
So yeah, better than I expected. I'm only about five hours in though, so we'll see how good it really is, but so far I'm impressed. Anyone else got this, or had a look at it?

 Re: Dragon Age: Origins
I just completed my second playthrough today. As good as it was the first time, I was getting bored on this run.
The combat is simple, as you said, but it gets repetitive. One of the mistakes that the developers made was giving some shops a stock of 100+ elfroots and some other shops a stock of 100+ flasks. All you have to do is buy them up, use herbology with Morrigan to combine them, and you get a zillion health potions. I fiddled with the tactics so the other characters on my team automatically heal themselves when their health drops below 50%. That way, when I was sick of the constant, monotonous fighting, I'd just retreat to the back of the room at let my teammates handle it, in the knowledge that they'd be able to get the job done without me.
Although there are a decent amount of sidequests, I was disappointed by the amount of areas you could visit. It didn't seem like there were enough for a game of this type. You can see they put a ton of effort in, and everywhere is highly detailed, but I wanted more.
I do tend to have problems with games/films/books that mess with the traditional mythology of things. So I thought the elves being former slaves was poor, some of the dwarf characters not having beards was totally unacceptable, and talking werewolves are ridiculous. And I'd have preferred if the darkspawn had been orcs and goblins, rather than herlocks and genlocks.
I'm just nitpicking though. Overall its a good game and worth picking up. I'm off to start my third playthrough, my first was with a dwarf warrior, my second an elf rogue, and now I think I'll go for a human mage.

I have no idea what I'm doing with the abilities and whatever. I'm always being told I can't open chests, presumably because I'm not a rogue, but surely there must be something I can level up so I can get in there. But still, that auto-healing method sounds pretty cool. How would I go about setting that up? I wouldn't even know where to look for herbology. I can barely navigate menus in this game, I'm just bluffing my way through by hitting A on all the sparkly things. Side quests are good when they're obvious, but things have gone ridiculous in RPGs lately. Especially Square games. I'm not into elves and dwarves and whatever, so they can throw any old green midget at me and I'll happily slash away. Does much change when you play with different origins? I figured Duncan recruits you and takes you to his camp whatever happens, then the game goes on normally from there. I hope I don't have to play six times over.

There's a rogue skill called "deft hands" that determines your skill at unlocking chests. If your character isn't a rogue, you could select one of the rogue characters in your squad and level them up manually so they have it. [chux] wrote: But still, that auto-healing method sounds pretty cool. How would I go about setting that up? On the tactics screen, select Self: Health: Health < 50% → Use health potion: Least powerful. That's if you have a ton of healing potions like I had. If you have less, you might want to set it at < 25%. Repeat that with all of your characters. You'll probably need that to defeat the dragons in the game. chux wrote: I wouldn't even know where to look for herbology. Holding the left trigger will bring the radial menu up. I think you select potions and the option to create a new potion will be there. I hope I don't have to play six times over. The only major difference is the beginning part. If you're playing for achievements, you could just save before the major plot developments, then load and play through that little section again to make all the opposite choices.
